Matiz

Matiz creates handmade ceramics like mugs and bowls, crafted with raw textures and natural imperfections of clay and pigment. It’s made for thoughtful interiors, calm coffee mornings, and homes that embrace tactile art.

The Challenge
Create a visual identity that captures MATIZ’s handmade and artistic character while still feeling modern and distinctive.

Communicate the raw textures, natural pigments and subtle imperfections that make each ceramic piece unique.

Create a flexible identity that can work across packaging, tissue paper and other brand materials.
The Solution
I chose a warm and earthy color palette inspired by clay, natural pigments and handmade materials. Terracotta brings warmth and connects to ceramics, while the deep muted green adds contrast and gives the brand a more distinctive feel. Off-white is used as a soft neutral to keep the identity balanced and let the colors and illustrations stand out.

I created simple illustrations of mugs, vases, bowls and other ceramic objects. Their irregular shapes and rough edges make them feel handmade rather than perfectly digital. The illustrations are used as a repeating pattern on the packaging, creating a recognizable visual element while directly connecting the brand to its products.

I used diformed typography and subtle imperfections inspired by the handmade process. The MATIZ wordmark has an irregular, slightly distorted character that gives it a crafted feel. This is balanced with a simpler typeface for supporting information, making the packaging easy to read while keeping the brand distinctive.

The overall aesthetic combines contemporary design with the imperfections of handmade ceramics. The textured backgrounds, earthy colors, irregular illustrations and imperfect typography create a warm and tactile feeling. The result feels artistic and modern while still communicating the handmade nature of MATIZ.

I translated the identity directly onto the boxes by combining solid earthy backgrounds with contrasting ceramic illustrations. Different color combinations allow the packaging to feel varied while still clearly belonging to the same brand. This creates packaging that is recognizable, expressive and connected to the handmade character of each MATIZ piece.
